Tumblr users will defend anything, you could make a post that’s just like “littering sucks and is bad BTW” and the notes will be like but what if someone doesn’t have the spoons to throw trash away

Not to rain on your parade, but the concept of “littering” is a classic example of a way to shift focus and blame towards individual behaviors carried out by people who have limited ability to actually make a difference, and away from the larger, more powerful entities that actually can.

Like when I see trash in my neighborhood, only a small portion of it was actually ‘littered’. A lot of it blew out of insecure dumpsters or trash bins on a windy day. The dumpster / bin design is flawed but they’re standardized so there isn’t much an individual can do about them.

And then there’s the question of the manufacturers, who make non-biodegradable and often non-recyclable materials including plastic packaging and products, and then sell and profit from them, but without paying for the cost of disposal or recycling of those products. There is no end of life fee factored into the price people pay when they buy items. And the manufacturers often lobby to resist changes to introduce such fees.

So yeah, the concept of littering is problematic. And this is not as ridiculous a take as you probably thought it was, huh, OP?

Tumblr isn’t so bad after all, sometimes people legit have new takes you might not have thought of.

Damn it’s crazy that everyone else who read and reblogged this post realized what I meant except you. Almost like you were misinterpreting my post on purpose as a gotcha. Almost like that was the point of my fucking post in the first place!
